In 2017, we accepted a gracious invitation to visit artist Frank Hursh and his
family in Queretaro, Mexico - a three-hour drive northwest of Mexico City. Earlier that year, we met Frank while installing an exhibition celebrating
artists who attended the historical and experimental Black Mountain College.
Being so inspired by Frank and his commitment to the arts, as well as his passion for painting - even into his
nineties, we had to capture a bit of his story. As one of the few students still alive who attended
Black Mountain College in the late 1940's, it is an honor to hear direct accounts of life on the campus
during such a pivotal time in the history of contemporary art in the United States.
So where exactly is "here"?
CASA AZUL, Museo Frida Kahlo in Mexico City, Mexico.
While near Mexico City, we visited the Museo Frida Kahlo, also known as
Casa Azul, or the Blue House. When enetering the interior courtyard
of the beautiful museum, home to the powerful art couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera from 1929 until Frida's death in
1954, you are surrounded by cobalt blue walls.
Without expectation or preparation, we both, indepndently, became
so overwhelmed by the power and beauty of the cobalt blue that we spent the next ten minutes incredibly emotional
and speechless. Few words were shared between us during that moment but many smiles (and tears) were exchanged.
We both understood and appreciated the depth and mystery of the experience we just had, and a forever love affair with
cobalt blue was born.
